Over the last 6 months. We have been contacted by around 100 people. All be caught up in the EA189 Emissions scandal. From a polite letter asking you to go in (this is an optional recall, you don't have to have it done) to the dealers doing as a “favour" mostly saying “we did the update for you, and with you get a 2 TBM (Trust Back Measure) warranty.
What they don't tell you is the EA189 recall causes a lot of issues: Exhaust Gas Ricirculation) Valve, DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Regeneration, Engine noise changes, Drive ability Changes, and the last and worst symptom of this “cure" is the huge decrease in MPG. We had one client who after having the EA189 was using over £150 a month extra in fuel.
The worse one we went out to had the update and with in 1 week, the Diesel Particulate Filter had blocked causing the car to drop in to “Limp Mode", after we got to the car we ran the dealer level diagnostics, to trace the fault. No fault found, we then road tested the car to find it not regenerating.
Back to old component testing, checking the DPF (all good) check DPF Pressure Sensor (all ok) had enough fuel in it, glow plugs all OK.
The we looked at the software numbers. We saw it had the variant numbers 9978 (EA189 Software Version) which indicates that it has the software update. So “rolled" the software back to pre-emissions scandal version in this case 9970. We cleared all the faults down and went for a drive. It took a grand total of 15miles, to get the DPF regenerating and the soot levels to drop back to a very respectable level.
When all this is down we report back to each client the DPF levels and explain what to do next.
We can also carry out a TerraClean Diesel Tune service while there to help keep at an even better standard then we left it. Or some choose to have some tuning done either a Stage 1 or ECO map done.
